The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport released statistics on foreigners’ land and home ownership as of the end of 2022 on Jan. 31.

According to the data, 81,626 foreigners owned a total of 83,512 housing units, or about 0.4% of the total number of housing units (18.95 million, based on price disclosure). By nationality, the Chinese accounted for 53.8% of all foreigners with 44,889 households. They were followed by the United States (19,923 households), Canada (5810 households), Taiwan (3271 households), and Australia (1740 households).

Home ownership was highest in the metropolitan area.

Foreigners owned 61,498 homes in the metropolitan area and 21,414 homes in the provinces.

By housing type, there were 50,135 apartments, 25,824 townhouses, and multifamily units. There were 7553 single-family homes.

There were 76,334 (93.5%) owners of one house, but there were also 4121 (5.0%) owners of two houses and 1171 (1.4%) owners of three or more houses.

At the end of last year, the amount of land in Korea held by foreigners increased by 1.8% (4.6 million㎡) from the end of 2021 to 26,401㎡, or 0.26% of the total land area.
