Chen swept the men’s single stage in the 2017-2018 season with various four-round jumps. He was considered a gold medalist at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, but fell to fifth place after an accidental collapse in the short program.
At the Beijing Winter Olympics last year, following the PyeongChang Games, he had a ‘match of the century’ with his rival Yuzuru Hanyu (28, Japan). He overcame his mistake four years ago and won the gold medal with a total score of 332.6 points.
After the Beijing Olympics, Chen announced that he would focus on his studies and took a break this season.
The best program award went to pair Gabriel Papadakis-Guillaume Cijron Joe (France), and the best newcomer award went to Isabeau Levito (USA), who won the women’s singles at the Junior World Championships last year.
The best choreographer award was given to Sherin Bourne (Canada), who was in charge of Cha Jun-hwan’s (22, Korea University) program this season. The best leader award was given to Canada’s Patrice Rojong.
The achievement award was given to Katarina Witt (Germany), who reigned as the top figure skating star in the 1980s. He won two consecutive gold medals at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics and the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
American figure skater Ilya Malinin, who performed the world’s first quadruple axel jump, was selected as the recipient of the Special Achievement Award.
Unfortunately, Korean figure skaters did not make it to the finalists.
Since last December, the ISU has selected finalists for each category of the ISU Skating Awards through online fan voting. Winners were determined by the evaluation of the jury.
